Myra Ancient City: A Journey into the Fascinating History of Lycia

A Treasure Reaching Us from the Dusty Pages of History

Myra, one of the most magnificent cities of Lycia, mesmerizes its visitors with both its historical and natural beauty. With its rock-cut tombs, ancient theater, and the story of Saint Nicholas, Myra offers not just a trip but a journey through time. In this article, you will find the history of Myra, the must-visit places, transportation details, and travel tips.

The History of Myra

Why is Myra an important ancient city?

Myra was one of the six major cities of the Lycian League with voting rights. The city began flourishing in the 5th century BC and reached its golden age during the Roman period in terms of both trade and culture.

What is the significance of the rock-cut tombs?

The Lycians carved tombs into rocks to honor their dead. They believed that placing the tombs at high altitudes would help the souls ascend to the heavens more easily. The carvings and figures on these tombs reflect the rich culture and beliefs of the time.

Who is Saint Nicholas?

Known as Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas served as the bishop of Myra. He is remembered for his generosity towards the poor, his love for children, and his miracles. His story has had a profound impact on the Christian world, evolving into the figure of Santa Claus we know today.

Places to Visit in Myra

1. Rock-Cut Tombs

The rock-cut tombs, the symbol of Myra, showcase the artistry and engineering skills of the Lycian civilization. Carved into high cliffs, these tombs are not just burial sites but also an expression of the Lycians’ deep respect for their dead.

The facades of the tombs are adorned with columns and carvings resembling temple architecture. Among the most notable are the King’s Tombs. The reliefs at the entrance depict the social status and life stories of the tomb owners. Another reason for the high placement of the tombs was the Lycians’ belief that it made it easier for souls to reach the heavens.

Must-Do:

Pay close attention to the details of the tombs; some still retain traces of their original colors.

2. Ancient Theater

The ancient theater in Myra, remarkably well-preserved from the Roman period, stands out as one of the largest theaters in Lycia, with a capacity of 11,000 people. This structure hosted not only theatrical performances but also gladiator fights and public gatherings.

The most striking feature of the theater is its acoustics. From any seat, you can clearly hear someone speaking on stage. Around the theater, you’ll find inscriptions and statue fragments that bear the architectural traces of the era, offering invaluable insights into the region’s rich history.

Must-Do:

Climb to the top row of the theater to enjoy breathtaking views of Myra.

Examine the inscriptions and statues for clues about life in that era.

3. Church of Saint Nicholas

Located in the center of Demre, the Church of Saint Nicholas is an important site not only for the Christian world but also for history and architecture enthusiasts. Built in the 4th century, this church served as the bishopric of Saint Nicholas, who is known for his generosity towards the poor and his love for children. His story is the foundation of the Santa Claus legend.

The interior of the church is adorned with well-preserved frescoes depicting significant scenes from Christian history. In the courtyard, a tombstone once believed to be the grave of Saint Nicholas can be found, though his remains were later taken to Bari, Italy.

Must-Do:

Take photos of the ancient stone structures around the church.

Listen to the story of Saint Nicholas from a guide at the site.
