Tersane Bay: Swimming Among Ancient Ruins in Kekova

Tersane Bay in Kekova Island offers a secluded anchorage where tour boats stop for a swim among history. Overview: On the northwestern side of Kekova Island – a small island near Demre in Antalya Province – lies Tersane Bay, a cove where history and turquoise waters meet. This sheltered bay is a highlight of Kekova boat tours and the only spot near the Sunken City where boats are allowed to anchor for swimming. Its name Tersane literally means “shipyard” in Turkish, hinting at the cove’s past life as an ancient shipbuilding harbor.

History & Ruins

Steeped in history, the Kekova region is dotted with relics of past civilizations. In Tersane Bay itself, you can see partly submerged ruins, including underwater foundations of a Byzantine-era church marking the edge of Kekova’s Sunken City. Centuries ago, this inlet served as the shipyard of the Lycian city, until 2nd-century earthquakes submerged much of the settlement. Today the bay’s clear shallows reveal remnants of stone walls and pottery on the seabed, offering a glimpse into antiquity. Once your boat anchors, you can even wade ashore to walk among toppled stones and ruins. Because most of Kekova’s archaeological zone is protected (no swimming or diving allowed in the main Sunken City area), Tersane Bay stands out as a unique window into the past that you can experience up close.

Swimming & Snorkeling

Tersane Bay’s crystal-clear water makes it ideal for a refreshing swim and snorkeling. While swimming in the calm bay, you might spot colorful fish and ancient wall foundations right below you. Snorkelers can observe submerged artifacts like pottery shards or ancient stonework – all visible thanks to the bay’s exceptional clarity. Given that many parts of Kekova are off-limits to swimmers and divers, being able to snorkel around historic ruins here is a highlight not to be missed. Do note that this is a protected heritage site, so while you enjoy the marine life and history below, take care not to disturb anything.

Getting There & Tips

Tersane Bay is only reachable by sea, typically as part of a guided boat tour from Kaş, Üçağız, or Demre. Most full-day Kekova tours include a swim stop at Tersane, as well as a look at the Sunken City from the boat and a visit to Simena Castle. To make the most of your visit, pack a snorkel mask and water shoes. Water shoes are handy because after a swim you may want to explore the shore, where rocks or sea urchins could be underfoot. Consider a waterproof camera to capture the underwater scenery. Remember to respect the site – look but don’t touch or remove any remains.

Tersane Bay truly lets you swim through history. Floating above sunken ruins in clear Mediterranean water is an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning a Kekova boat trip, be sure to include this magical cove on your itinerary.
